Three month probe by Chatham police leads to eight arrests

Police have arrested eight people on dozens of charges following a three-month probe into several property crimes throughout Chatham-Kent.

The Chatham-Kent Police Community Patrol and Criminal Investigation Branches were involved in the investigation of crimes mainly in Raleigh and Tilbury East townships.

Those arrested include Jeffrey James Newham, 28, of Tilbury, Darrin Karl Newham, 26, David Allen, 62, of Merlin, Christopher Paul Caza, 33, of Tilbury, Justin Harvey Burtch, 34, of Dresden, Robert William McVety, 29, of Chatham, Christine Susan Donais, 33, of Tilbury and one youth.

They face a total of 64 charges, including break and enter, possession of stolen property and attempt to obstruct justice.

Jeffrey Newham and Darrin Newham are also charged with arson after the company Maris Technical went up in flames on Oct. 5, 2012. The blaze, at 1 Erie St. S. in Merlin, caused more than $275,000 in damage. No one was hurt.

Chatham-Kent police said they want to thank citizens who came forward to help the investigators.
