A man is in custody in connection with a bank robbery in LaSalle last week.
Jefrey Ssekawunde, 26, is awaiting arraignment and facing numerous charges, LaSalle police said Tuesday.
LaSalle police credited the Canada Border Services Agency for the initial arrest of the suspect and providing investigators with “vital information.”
According to police, CBSA detained Ssekawunde on March 1 for an immigration violation.
Ssekawunde was taken into custody and transported to Toronto for a hearing. Meanwhile, CBSA contacted LaSalle police.
LaSalle police then executed a search warrant at a Windsor residence and seized evidence.
Officers travelled to Toronto and took custody of Ssekawunde on Monday.
He’s being held at Windsor Jail. Charges against him include robbery.
LaSalle police say their investigation continues.
On the morning of Feb. 28, a lone masked man brandishing a small black handgun robbed the CIBC branch at 5870 Malden Rd.
The suspect fled with an undisclosed quantity of cash. Surveillance cameras captured numerous images of the suspect during the crime.
No one was hurt.
The incident was the first bank robbery in LaSalle in recent memory.
