CAW Local 444 handed out a pair of $2,000 cheques Friday to Windsor’s House of Sophrosyne and the Well-Come Centre for Human Potential as part of its support for International Women’s Day.
The donations were just two of 50 $2,000 donations the CAW made across Canada for International Women’s Day.
The Well-Come Centre at 263 Bridge Avenue is a shelter for homeless and low-income women 18 or older and their children. The 11-bed facility offers a variety of educational and support programs.
The House of Sophrosyne at 1771 Chappell Ave. offers an all-female environment for those battling chemical dependency.
“We work with a lot of organizations in the community and they all need help,” said Susan McKinnon, chairperson of Local 444′s Women’s Committee.
“We try to do as much as possible.”
McKinnon said the Well-Come Centre is the only shelter for homeless women in the city and the impact of a $2,000 cheque is substantial.
“They have a drop-in-program and the $2,000 will fund that for an entire year,” McKinnon said. “Now, they’re free to work at fund raising for other requirements.”
