Windsor’s Greek community will vote today on whether to go ahead with building a new church and community centre at the former Grace Hospital site.
The vote takes place today at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church on Ellis Street at 3 p.m. Greek community president Mike Margaritis said he expects to have a decision by 5:30 p.m.
Members of the community will decide whether to start building a major development that includes a retail complex and seniors’ residence on University Avenue West for up to $8-million or move ahead with their original plan to build on the church’s 12-acre lot on Walker Road.
Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis met with the Greek community a month ago to present the proposal for the Grace Hospital site.
At that time, Margaritis said he wanted to get an appraisal for the Walker Road land before bringing the proposal to a vote.
