The first permanent section of the Herb Gray Parkway project is set to open to traffic early Wednesday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police officers will be on hand to guide motorists onto the new three-kilometre stretch of road – the new Highway 3 – between Howard Avenue and Huron Church Line starting Tuesday afternoon. The road is scheduled to fully open to traffic by 6 a.m. Wednesday.

“This is a really exciting time,” said Cindy Prince, a spokeswoman for Parkway Infrastructure Constructors. “This is a huge step in this project. I hope the community will remain patient and continue to work with us.”

Meanwhile, the intersection at Huron Church Line and Talbot Road-Highway 3 closes this week for an estimated four months. The Sandwich West Parkway will serve as the main detour route.

The $1.4-billion border feeder highway is running on budget and on time for the most part, parkway officials said Monday. The first permanent stretch of highway was originally scheduled to open in February, but was delayed for about a month because of bad weather.
