Extracurricular activities could be returning to public elementary schools after the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario lifted its advice to not participate in such activities late Tuesday night.

In a statement on the ETFO website, union president Sam Hammond credited the move to the optimism that the continuing talks with the provincial government would address his group’s key concerns.

“As you know we have been in discussions with the government since February,” Hammond said.

“We are now confident that the government has demonstrated a commitment to dealing with concrete items of importance to our members.

“In light of the progress made during these discussions and a commitment to address outstanding issues will continue, ETFO is suspending its advice to members regarding voluntary/extracurricular activities.”

Premier Kathleen Wynne has made the return of extracurricular activities a priority since assuming the leadership of the Liberal minority government. The public high school teachers’ union had rescinded its boycott last month.

“I’m happy to learn that the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario has suspended their advice to members regarding voluntary extracurricular activities,” Wynne said in a released statement.

“I hope that elementary school students, teachers and support staff across the province will once again enjoy the activities and programs that mean so much to them.”

Wynne said she’s optimistic the government is progressing in repairing the damage done to its relationship with the province’s teachers when Bill 115 imposed a new two-year contract on them.

“Today’s news is a great indication of the hard work all parties are putting into the repair of this valued relationship,” Wynne said.

“It shows our willingness to work together, to listen to one another’s concerns and to find common ground on which we can rebuild a foundation of trust and create an effective process going forward.”

However, Wynne cautioned that the government wasn’t going to wander from the path it was taking fiscally.

“We have been clear that this issue needs to be addressed within Ontario’s existing fiscal framework,” Wynne said.

“But I am confident that our government’s commitment to fairness, consistency and respect in our conversations with ETFO and all our partners will continue to result in real work being done for the people of Ontario.”
