A 17-year-old alleged rape victim admitted in court Wednesday that she lied several times to police about events connected to the alleged sexual assault.
The girl said Wednesday it wasn’t true when she told police two of her school friends were at a party in a house on Mill Street where the alleged assault occurred.
The girl said she lied because she thought she’d get in trouble for going to a party with older men where she knew no one. She pointed out this mistake to the prosecutor only days before she testified the last week. It was also only a day after another witness called her and told her about her own testimony in court.
The girl said Wednesday that she lied to police about her mother’s whereabouts and was purposefully vague on what she drank at a bar she went to with her friend and the older guys because she was afraid she’d get in trouble for underage drinking.
During a preliminary hearing, she confessed to drinking beer at the bar.
Defence lawyer Frank Miller tried unsuccessfully to get the girl to admit she tried to convince the police that the older men tricked her into drinking.
The girl testified for the third day against Stan Joseph Laforge, 26, and Curtis James Scott, 31. The men are charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and unlawful confinement in relation to incidents in late November 2009.
The girl is one of two young women, 14 at the time of the incident and who can’t be named because of a publication ban, alleging they were sexually assaulted at a home on Mill Street.
The two girls have testified they wandered around their west end neighbourhood when they were invited by unknown “older guys” to a party.
After drinking and smoking marijuana in the Mill Street house, the girls went to Spicoli’s Bar on Sandwich Street with the men. When they returned to the house, the girls said they were sexually assaulted in an upstairs bedroom.
