Leamington will use more than $1 million of its federal gas tax funding to improve one of its busiest intersections.

Erie Street South and Oak Street will soon get a makeover including new left turn lanes, energy-efficient LED streetlights and traffic signals, improvements at the nearby Heinz Parkette, and a pedestrian trail.

The project cost is $2.1 million with $1 million coming from the gas tax fund, which helps municipalities build and revitalize public infrastructure.

In a news release, Leamington Mayor John Paterson said the intersection is an important  people mover, for vehicles, walkers and cyclists, and the improvements are long overdue.

Chatham-Kent-Essex MP Dave Van Kesteren said in the release that the road upgrade will improve commute times and safety as well as save taxpayers’ dollars through lower future maintenance costs.

Leamington will receive about $3.5 million between 2010 and 2014 from the gas tax fund.
