A west end resident counted 17 Emergency Service Unit officers swarming his neighbourhood Wednesday night minutes before a man was taken into custody.
Neighbours heard a loud bang around 7 p.m. and saw smoke billowing from 3253 Peter St. before ESU officers stormed in.
Windsor police Sgt. Steve Dickson said ESU officers armed with a search warrant and accompanied by police dogs were conducting a drug raid at the apartment building.
Melissa Pillon, 28, was watching TV with her five children when she noticed several ESU officers cut across her front yard.
Five minutes later, a loud bang was heard and a witness saw the front door of the building swing open.
“It’s nerve-racking,” Pillon said. “I’m not used to this.”
Pillon just moved from the county to her Peter Street home on Saturday. The apartment building police surrounded is steps from her home.
“It makes me nervous because of my kids,” she said.
A neighbour, who asked to not be identified, said he counted 17 ESU officers outside the house.
“All I know is there is high traffic in that building,” he said. “Taxis pull up, people go in and minutes later come back out.”
The man said this is not the first time ESU officers have searched the apartment building.
“I just hope this ends it. There’s a lot of kids around here,” he said.
The owner of the building said there are nine units.
Dickson said police are still investigating and were not releasing any more information at this time.
