Responding to rising frustration by drivers again faced with construction congestion at the Provincial Road and Cabana Road East intersection, city officials are calling for patience.
Ongoing construction has reduced traffic to one lane in each direction.
The roadway sees up to 35,000 vehicles each day and drivers already suffered through lengthy detours and delays last year to allow for completion of the $8.7-million upgrade of the heavily-travelled intersection.
With the arrival of spring, traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction. The reduction began at the start of the month and will remain so at least for the next two to three weeks, said Mike Palanacki, the city’s executive director of operations.

While the roadway was completed last year, the project’s finishing work is being done, which includes street lighting, sidewalk construction and landscaping work, he said.
That work likely won’t be completed until the end of June, but lane closures will likely only be needed for the next few weeks at most.
“There will only be periodic lane restrictions after that,” Palanacki said. “It will be a moving operation.”
He called the intersection project one of the most complex the city has tackled, given the myriad of utilities in that location which includes gas lines, communications lines and railroad tracks.
“Much of the complexity is actually behind us, so that’s the good news,” Palanacki said. “What’s happening now is really the finishing work.
“We are just asking for a little more patience and tolerance until work gets completed in the next few weeks.”
