The humane society is calling it a “serious case of animal cruelty” after someone starved a young dog for weeks, then abandoned him to die tied to a fence .

The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society received a call around 1:45 a.m. on April 26 about a dog chained to a fence. The responding officer found “an extremely emaciated dog.” The officer freed the dog and brought him to the humane society.

Veterinarian Dr. Aimee Seguin examined the dog, likely a lab/chow mix around three-years-old, who is now named Wilson. He was so dangerously underweight that the humane society said Wilson would have been given little or no food for weeks before he was found.

Medical testing has revealed no medical reason for Wilson’s emaciated condition, apart from forced starvation.

In the week he has been at the humane society, Wilson has gained almost nine pounds.

He was left tied to a fence near Lauzon Animal Hospital at Tranby Avenue and Lauzon Road. The humane society believes Wilson was left there between midnight and 1:30 a.m. on April 26.

Anyone with information about who may have neglected and abandoned Wilson can call the humane society investigations department at 519-966-5751 ext. 16. You can also make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477.

Wilson, a three-year-old lab/chow mix, was discovered chained to a fence on April 26. The dog was extremely emaciated and the Windsor/Essex Humane Society is looking to the public to help identify the pet's owners. (HANDOUT/The Windsor Star)
