The City of Windsor has won the United Way’s 2012 Community Workplace Champion Award for its employee giving and as the largest contributor of funds within the municipal sector.

Last week, city representatives presented a cheque for $142,761 to the United Way.

Some of the highlights of the city’s campaign: CUPE Local 82 outside workers gave an average gift of $111.06 per employee, a 14-per-cent increase, for a total of $12,143; Windsor Fire & Rescue posted a 50-per-cent increase in workplace donations.

In addition to cash donations, United Way thanked city staff for raising the profile of its annual campaign, including efforts by CUPE locals 82 and 543 collecting thousands of dollars in school supplies for the needy as part of the city’s kickoff event. City departments also hosted bake sales and dress-down days, there was a dunk tank event and purchasing and risk management event raised funds through the sale of used parking meter batteries.

United Way CEO Penny Marrett said there are more than 600 workplace fundraising campaigns each year, with only six being honoured with awards. Almost 200,000 people in Windsor and Essex County received support from United Way funded initiatives last year.
