Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj and former Erie St. Clair LHIN board chair Dave Cooke will co-chair a new committee to determine which services and programs Windsor’s mega-hospital will offer.

“It’s the first major step towards the planning, design and eventual construction,” Musyj said on Wednesday.

The committee – which will include representatives from both Windsor hospitals, the LHIN, city council, the Community Care Access Centre and members of the community – will focus on the hospital programs. Musyj said questions of hospital design and location will not be addressed until later planning phases.

Musyj said he predicts it will take about six months for this first planning phase to be completed. “We’ll be reaching out to the public-at-large and getting their feedback,” he said.

Cooke previously co-chaired the advisory committee that gauged public support on the super-hospital idea with MPP Teresa Piruzza (L – Windsor West) and former city councillor Tom Porter.

This committee is separate from the seven working groups that are currently figuring out how Windsor Regional and Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital will redistribute their responsibilities in the years leading up to the new hospital opening.

In February, the city’s two hospitals announced they would re-align their priorities to make the move into the new hospital smoother.

Windsor Regional will take over all acute-care services and Hotel-Dieu will take over the Tayfour campus and focus on chronic care, rehabilitation and mental health. Both hospitals stress there is still no set date for when this will occur and that business will continue as usual at both institutions.
