Scotiabank is contributing $50,000 and scores of volunteers to become the latest gold level sponsor to the 2013 Windsor-Essex International Children’s Games.

“As Canada’s most international bank, supporting our communities through the Bright Future program is a big part of Scotiabank’s culture and our way of giving back to the network of 55 countries we call home,” said Dave Wilson, Scotiabank’s Ontario Southwest district vice-president, retail and small business banking.

The 47th International Children’s Games, running from Aug. 14 to 19, will see 1,500 young athletes and coaches from more than 80 cities from dozens of countries descend on Windsor to compete in eight different sports at various venues. The competition for youths aged 12 to 15, founded in 1968 to promote peace and friendship through sports, is recognized by the International Olympic Committee and has become the world’s largest international multi-sport youth games.

“In the spirit of friendship and good sportsmanship, we wish the very best of luck to all the participants during these upcoming games,” said Terry Roman, Scotiabank’s director of commercial banking.

Just in the past few weeks, the province announced a $250,000 grant to the local ICG hosts, BASF announced a $12,000 donation, and The Sandbox Project contributed $10,000.

Other donors announced so far: Tourism Windsor Essex-Pelee Island as a diamond sponsor with a cheque for $200,000; Subway Restaurants as a platinum sponsor with a $100,000 pledge; the University of Windsor, Windsor Essex Community Foundation, Nature Fresh Farms, Green Shield Canada and St. Clair College Foundation became gold sponsors by each kicking in $50,000 pledges. Caesars Windsor and True Sport are silver sponsors; Koolini and the downtown Keg restaurants, KPMG, Devonshire Mall and the Heart and Stroke Foundation are bronze sponsors ($10,000) and the city’s International Relations Committee with a $6,000 sponsorship.
