There won’t be a two-wheeled trek across the Ambassador Bridge this year. The 2013 Bike the Bridge event has been officially cancelled.
A short statement on the event’s website said, “The International Bridge Company was unable to provide a date to cross the bridge due to security concerns.”
Kari Gignac, chair of the Windsor Bicycling Committee which helps organize the event, said the announcement came out of the blue at the end of May. The group, along with Tour de Troit, which hosts bicycling tours in Detroit, had set the date for July 14 and even received confirmation from the bridge company, Gignac said.
“They don’t really give any specific reasons,” Gignac said of the news, which she received via email from the organizers of Tour de Troit.
“At this point it’s too late to promote and organize the event anyways,” she said. But the group will definitely organize a 2014 edition, she said. “We definitely want to do it again. It’s an awesome event.”
The event brings together cyclists from Windsor and Detroit to cross the Ambassador Bridge and tour one of the two host communities. The 2013 edition would have been the fifth edition of Bike the Bridge and Detroit would have been the host city.
Last year, almost 200 cyclists took part and biked across from Detroit to Windsor, then either toured Windsor’s riverfront trial or made the trek out to Amherstburg to visit Fort Malden.
A spokesperson for the bridge company could not be reached on Monday evening for comment.
