Bike the Bridge rescheduled for October

Cyclists will still get a chance to ride across the Ambassador Bridge this year — but they’ll have to wait until the fall, say organizers of the annual Bike the Bridge event.

Originally planned for mid-July, the event was abruptly cancelled due to the security concerns of the bridge’s ownership.

But on Friday, city councillor Alan Halberstadt (who is one of the event’s supporters on this side of the border) said there’s been further discussion and it’s been decided that the ride will go on — four months from now.

The tentative new date for the event is Oct. 13.

Halberstadt admitted that several details still need to be worked out, but he said bridge ownership has confirmed the rescheduling.

Further information will be announced by organizers as the event takes shape.

Now in its fifth year, Bike the Bridge involves the Ambassador Bridge temporarily allowing cyclists to cross from Windsor to Detroit on their pedal-powered two-wheel vehicles.

The bridge is normally closed to any pedestrian or bicycle traffic.

Halberstadt said this year Canadian participants will, for the first time, have the opportunity to make a return trip on their bicycles.

In previous years, the Ambassador Bridge only allowed a window for bike travel in one direction — from Windsor to Detroit.

Halberstadt said that bridge ownership will set aside more time on Oct. 13 to allow bike travel from Detroit to Windsor.
