Downtown Mission in need of food items

The Downtown Mission is hoping for a Christmas-in-July response to its call for food items that are needed to fill its empty shelves.

Ron Dunn, director of development and community relations, said the mission is “critically low” on bottled water, peanut butter and jam, soups, Kraft Dinner, canned meats and tuna, canned vegetables and fruit and juice.

“Christmas time brings a rush of food items (and) those items generally last us for several months,” Dunn said in a news release. “We are now really looking for a Christmas-in-July type bailout.”

Dunn also said the mission will be keeping its doors open during severe hot weather days this summer.

If the outside temperature and the humidex reading combine to make it feel like 38 C, guests will be welcome to stay and rest until 6 p.m.

“We hope that this effort will help those in need stay healthy during the extreme heat expected this summer,” Dunn said.

The Downtown Mission is at 664 Victoria Ave.
