LaSalle firefighter Randy Curtis has devoted 20 years to serving his community and Tuesday he was honoured by the federal government for his exemplary service.
Fire Chief Dave Sutton presented Curtis with an Exemplary Service Medal awarded by the Governor General’s office, something he said “doesn’t happen often,” while Curtis’s wife Kelly looked on. About 15 firefighters in dress uniform also attended the presentation during Tuesday’s council meeting.
“I wouldn’t be able to do this without the support of my wife Kelly,” said Curtis, who is a captain with the volunteer service. “And the boys (Brody, 6 and Jacques, 4) are pretty excited.”
Sutton said firefighting is marked by long hours of calm, shattered by “moments of stark terror,” calling fire “an unpredictable and unforgiving enemy.”
Sutton, who recommended Curtis, 45, for the medal, said it was the first time he had presented the “very prestigious” honour.
