What’s in a name? City won’t say yet

Windsor’s splashy new Family Aquatic Complex has a new name, but the mayor and city council are keeping it under wraps for now.

With a week left before the competitive swimming portion of the $78-million facility opens up for the five-day International Children’s Games starting Aug. 14, city hall is playing coy with what the place is going to be called.

Council discussed awarding the naming rights behind closed doors Tuesday night, but Mayor Eddie Francis said it wouldn’t be fair to divulge who gets to attach their name to the complex until the winner gets to be part of any formal announcement.

Francis said the name will probably be divulged later this week.

It cost the Windsor Family Credit Union $1.62 million to attach its name, for a decade, to the city’s east-side arena with its four ice pads. All the naming rights attached to the $71-million WFCU Centre earn the city about $290,000 a year.

City administration was not expecting a similar-sized haul for the naming of the aquatic complex, but the initial operating budget approved by council calls for $150,000 in annual “advertising and other revenues,” the bulk of that from the naming sponsorships.
