The former Windsor Armouries building got a temporary makeover on the weekend.
Suede Productions and Marz Media put on a 3D-Projective Mapping presentation in front of the downtown Armouries during Balloonapalooza, displaying moving images – everything from stick men, sharks and fireworks to giant lips and growing vines. Go to windsorstar.com to see the amazing show.
“3D-mapping is essentially projecting an image of a building on that very same building, and then start to change the shape of that building,” said Nick Shields, co-owner of Suede Productions.
“It’s an amazing rock and roll show with a real kind psychedelic visual to it. That’s what we want to do here.”
The 3D-Projective Mapping show lasted four minutes. It ran every half hour starting at 9:30 p.m., with the last show at 11 p.m. There was an encore presentation Sunday night.
Preparations for the presentation started on Friday night with the setting up of three projectors, audio, lights, as well as covering windows and organizing C02 smoke machines.

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Windsor Armouries to watch the 3D-Project Moving Display presented on the front of the building Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013. Kids gasped, cheered and clapped at the artwork display of stickmen, sharks, fireworks, penguins and much more. (JOEL BOYCE / The Windsor Star)
Shields said he had a lot of support from the city and local businesses to put on his show.
The owners at Booster Juice on University Avenue East let them use their roof to set up their three projectors, said Shields. He also co-ordinated with the City of Windsor and Enwin Utilities to shut down the street lights during their presentation. The Windsor Star also helped by having its outdoor LED signs and tickers go to black during the scheduled times.
The artwork involved to put on the 3D-Projective Mapping presentation took more than 100 hours to create.
“I’m afraid to calculate the hours,” Shields joked.
“We want a lot of great eye candy that makes you ask yourself ‘what just happened’ and ‘how did that happen?’ Before you think about the solution, a new thing is happening.”
