Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Windsor and Essex County.

At 7:10 p.m., meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms with very heavy downpours capable of producing localized flooding.

Widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to move into the Windsor and Sarnia areas over the next hour.

It will continue to intensify and track southeastward over the next several hours. General rainfall amounts are expected to be in the 30 to 50 millimetre range, however, locally higher amounts of 50 to 75 millimetres will be likely in areas hit with the heaviest thunderstorms.

Local downpours can cause flash floods and weather officials are urging motorists to avoid driving through water on roads and to keep an eye out for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Such severe storms are capable of producing tornadoes.
