Fencing is being set up around the perimeter of Assumption Church as a precaution from falling mortar, stone and bricks as the historic church undergoes renovation and repairs.
In recent weeks, architects, engineers and restoration workers have been removing loose materials around the exterior of the church, but the fear is with the freeze and thaw during the winter months, additional materials may become loose and fall, said Mark Adkinson, spokesman for the Diocese of London which is helping oversee the project.
Experts retained by the church are nearing completion of prioritizing the next phase of the $9-million renovation effort to save the national historic landmark church which opened in 1845, he said. Reinforcement of the floor framing was among work recently completed.
