A “trusted” Canadian traveller has been kicked out of the NEXUS program for allegedly trying to smuggle 3,450 rounds of ammunition across the Ambassador Bridge.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the 36-year-old man, a Canadian citizen, entered the NEXUS lane on Sept. 11. He said had nothing to declare.

The officer sent him to secondary inspection, where a search of the car turned up several boxes of ammunition. A total of 3,450 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition were hidden under the front passenger side floor mat. Border officers seized them.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) questioned the man and released him. They issued him a civil penalty and removed him from the NEXUS program.

The NEXUS program allows pre-screened travellers expedited processing by U.S. and Canadian officials at dedicated customs lanes and marine reporting locations.

“The trusted traveler program allows low risk, frequent border travellers benefits not available to others,” Acting Port Director David Beculheimer said in a press release. “There is zero tolerance for any violations and those who attempt to circumvent the rules will be removed from the program.”
