DETROIT — Arson investigators are taking over from firefighters after a big blaze at an abandoned factory in Detroit was largely extinguished.
The large, vacant building once housed a trucking company and a bread factory. It was on fire for much of Thursday afternoon on the city’s west side. No injuries were reported.
Smoke could be seen for miles around the structure near Interstate 94.

Utility crews cut power to residents and businesses in the immediate area. People were asked to close doors and windows because of smoke and fumes.
Fire crews had worked outside the structure because of concerns that there might be hazardous waste inside. Fire officials said neighbours reported witnessing people dumping boxes with biohazard markings in the building.
The cause of the blaze wasn’t immediately known.
