Windsor police now say the culprits in a Christmas Eve grocery store heist broke in through a back door, not the ceiling.

The break-in to Metro at 3663 Tecumseh Rd. E. happened sometime overnight between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

An employee discovered someone had broken in after arriving at the store for routine maintenance.  The employee tried to call police from the store but couldn’t because the phone lines were dead. Police said the burglars cut the phone lines to deactivate the alarms. The crooks also popped out ceiling tiles to disable audible alarms inside the store.

Police initially said the burglars broke into the building through the roof. But they said Friday the crooks forced their way through a produce receiving door at the back of the building.

Once inside, the thieves made their way to the office and broke into a couple safes. Police found about 15 cash trays scattered on the floor. Police have not confirmed the amount of cash taken, but estimate that it’s in the $4,000 range.

Anyone with information can call police at 519-255-6700 ext. 4349 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 (TIPS). You can also leave tips online at www.catchcrooks.com or on the Windsor police Facebook page.
