Windsor Regional Hospital has warned to staff to keep watch for a trio of brazen thieves who have been stalking the halls stealing everything from cash to personal alarms.
“We’ve alerted our staff at both sites that if they see any of these individuals on the premises to alert our security immediately, who will contact the Windsor police,” said spokesman Ron Foster.

After getting reports of missing items, hospital officials checked their surveillance cameras. They realized that two women and a man have repeatedly appeared on video over the last week at both the Met and Ouellette campuses.
“We do have a very sophisticated security camera system at both sites, so there are very good visuals of these individuals,” said Foster. “We have clear visual of people we suspect and who police suspect. More than likely, those individuals could be apprehended.”

Foster said the thieves broke into at least one staff locker. They also stole some cash, clothing, cellphones, office supplies and staff identification badges, swipe cards and personal alarms. After learning of the thefts, the hospital deactivated those security items.
Despite those thefts and other recent breaches in the last few years, Foster said people have no reason to fear for their safety while at either hospital location. While the hospital is open to almost anyone during the day, things changes at night.
“Naturally, in the evenings and after business hours we do secure a number of entrances and exits,” said Foster. “The public should feel secure coming into hospitals. We have security 24/7, and our sophisticated camera system which has proven to visually capture activity on all floors, corridors, in all public areas.”

Hospital CEO David Musyj called it “despicable” last November when a thief preyed on a woman as she slept at her unconscious husband’s bedside in the emergency room.
The 55-year-old victim had dozed off in a chair. She woke up to see a man standing over her, holding her purse. The thief, captured on hospital surveillance video, was later arrested near his home.
There was also a rash of thefts at the Met campus in June 2011. A woman with Stage 3 breast cancer was among the victims in six thefts that month. She returned from her radiation treatment to find her storage locker open and empty. Her purse, phone, identification and even a cross were gone.

Musyj himself was a victim. The thief stole his laptop. Police also arrested that person after he was caught on surveillance video, despite a failed escape attempt when he broke his ankle jumping from the second-floor window of a hotel room.
Musyj predicted Wednesday it also won’t be long before the most recent thieves are behind bars.
“People need to recognize that if they steal from the hospital they will be caught,” he said. “These individuals will be caught by the police.”
