Police think exposure to cold from a broken furnace may have played a role in the deaths of two brothers found in their Moy Avenue home Friday.

A small crowd of family members gathered in front of the green stucco bungalow at 929 Moy Ave., just north of Erie Street, while police went in and out Friday afternoon. Sarah Joan Bennett, the daughter of one of the men and the niece of the other, said the last time someone reported seeing either of them was a couple of weeks ago on Tecumseh Road.

Sarah said it wasn’t unusual to go for a while without hearing from her father, 68-year-old Robert Gordon Bennett, and her older uncle Douglas Edward Bennett. She was shocked and emotional to learn they had died.

The two men lived in the house “basically their whole lives,” Sarah said. “My grandmother left it to them.”

Sarah said her father was a retired Canada Post worker and remembered him as a big music fan. She said their house wasn’t in the best state of repair and it made sense that the broken furnace could have caused or contributed to their deaths.

Windsor Police Sgt. Jim Hladki said police were still trying to piece together what happened.

“No foul play is suspected at this point,” he said. “No one has seen them for the last week or so, so we’re just trying to establish the last time they were seen.”

Police were unable to immediately confirm whether an autopsy would be scheduled to definitively determine the cause of death.
