Host families needed for Japanese students

Eighty teens from Windsor’s twin city — Fujisawa, Japan — are coming to Windsor in late July and need a place to stay.

Organizers of the visit with Muskoka Language International are looking for host families for the 80 female high school students. They will be in Windsor from July 27 to Aug. 9 and although they will be in school and visiting local and Ontario sites during the day, they need families to stay with during the visit.

“It’s a lifelong friendship,” MLI homestay co-ordinator Deborah Wilds said Tuesday.

Wilds said this is the sixth or seventh time students from Fujisawa have come to visit Windsor and study English. They learn about Canadian culture and some students come back to visit or keep in touch on Facebook.

“They are very, very nervous when they first come. But by the time they leave, they are crying. They don’t want to go back.”

Host families do receive an honorarium and get a chance to learn about another culture.

To find out more about being a host family you can attend an information session May 14 at 7 p.m. at the Constable John Atkinson Memorial community centre on Alice Street. RSVP at homestay@mliesl.com if you plan to attend. Wilds can be reached at the same email or at 519-991-6903.
