The driver of a Mustang who got in a collision, then sparked a police chase after speeding away from the scene Monday night faces impaired and dangerous driving charges.

Emergency crews responded to the call at about 11 p.m. at Wyandotte Street East and Devonshire Road. Paramedics treated the 23-year-old driver of a 2001 Oldsmobile for neck pain and transported him to hospital.

Investigation revealed the Oldsmobile was stopped in traffic when it was struck from behind by an orange Mustang. Windsor police officers approached the Mustang, tapping on the driver’s side window.

Following the window tap, the vehicle’s engine revved and it fishtailed as it sped away, narrowly missing  an officer.

Police pursued the vehicle as it fled south on Devonshire Road. They caught up with it near Niagara Street and Argyle Road, where the Mustang stopped after police activated their emergency lights.

Officers said they could smell marijuana when the driver’s window rolled down. When the driver appeared to be unresponsive, police turned off the ignition and placed him in handcuffs.

Police called paramedics to assess the man, who had difficulty standing. The driver refused medical treatment and was transported to police headquarters, then to hospital after he had trouble staying awake.

Police charged a 20-year-old Tecumseh man with dangerous driving, impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision. Police are seeking a warrant to screen the man’s blood for drugs.
