The public school board has approved spending $5.4 million on renovations that will help usher in full-day schooling for kindergarten students.
In 2009, the Ontario Ministry of Education announced it would be putting into place full day kindergarten at all elementary schools in the province by 2014.
The coming local renovations — to be made at seven schools of the Greater Essex County District School Board — represent the fourth year of the school board’s plan to fulfill the ministry’s imperative.
Work will be done over the coming year on Roseland, Southwood, Northwood, Begley, Mouth Carmel-Blytheswood, Hetherington and Beaton schools.
Final floor plans have already been developed and approved.
According to an administrative report, construction will begin in February 2013, with completion in time for the start of the school year in September 2013.
The board approved the $5.4 million expenditure at a meeting on Tuesday night.
