A fire started by unattended cooking in a Chatham home Thursday spread to a neighbour’s home, causing around $300,000 in damages.

According to a statement by fire department Assistant  Chief Ric Scharf, a man was cooking french fries in his home at 37 Lorne Ave. when he went to assist a neighbour.

It was almost 1 p.m. when the man forgot about the fries and a fire erupted. Strong winds fanned the fire, making it stronger, Scharf said.

The fire spread next door to 39 Lorne Ave.

Scharf said narrow streets congested with parked vehicles restricted the fire department from getting fire trucks close to the blaze.

The total damage estimate for both houses is approximately $300,000.
