Windsor police are sending out a warning about a scam that includes the false promise of free stuff and a new job.
Several people have complained after receiving letters telling them they were selected as a mystery shopper, or “customer service evaluator.”
The letter comes with a business cheque and instructions. The target of the scam is told to cash the cheque and wire money to a couple of different numbers.
The target is also given a list of major chain stores, and told to spend $100 at one of them. The intended victim must then fill out a customer service survey about the store.
The letter states it could turn into a permanent job paying up to $550 a week for a “selected few.” The target is also promised some “training pay.”
The cheques enclosed with the letters are fraudulent. Police said the victim will be on the hook after cashing the fake cheque and wiring money to the fraudsters, who are believed to be out of province.
