Windsor residents are opening their hearts and wallets to veteran Harry Sigal, who was given a $20 parking ticket despite having poppies on his plate identifying him as a veteran.

The City of Windsor allows veterans to park free of charge at metres. A city official said Sigal was parked in a five-minute zone for more than 12 minutes while he was having breakfast with his brother on Wednesday.  The 89-year-old Second World War veteran said he was outraged at the indignity and is fighting the ticket in court.

In emails, at least four residents said they were disgusted by the dispute.

“Please tell Mr. Sigal that I will be honored to pay for every parking ticket he has or gets in the future,” said Kyle Gregoire. “It’s the least I can do for someone who put his life on the line for our country.”

Michael Bates offered to pay for his parking ticket and his breakfast tab.

“This will be my MITZE for the day,” Bates wrote in an e-mail.

Sigal was unavailable for comment Friday morning.
