Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Moroun has slipped considerably on the list of the richest people in the world, according to the annual billionaires list released Monday by Forbes magazine.

Moroun is ranked as tied for 1,268 with an estimated net worth of $1.1 billion, close to falling off the list of over 1,342 billionaires from across the globe.

The Grosse Pointe, Mich. transportation mogul had a net worth of $1.8 billion just three years ago when he was tied at 556 on the list, but has since been slowly sliding down.

He was at $1.5 billion in 2012. In the past year, he has spent considerably on legal fees, advertising and political contributions in order to fight the planned $1-billion government-backed Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) bridge – looming competition for his own bridge.

Carlos Slim Helú, the telecom giant in Mexico, remains at the top of the Forbes list with an estimated worth of $73 billion. He is followed by Microsoft guru Bill Gates at $67 billion. Famed investor Warren Buffet was fourth at $53.5 billion.

Media giant David Thomson and family was again listed as the richest Canadian – 24th on the list with a net worth of $20.3 billion.

Among those tied with Moroun at $1.1 billion is Buffet’s right-hand man Charles Munger and Montreal real estate developer Marcel Adams.

Others of note from this area include real estate investor Alfred Taubman tied at 490 at $2.9 billion, automaker William Ford Sr., tied at 1,161 at $1.25 billion, auto corporate boss Roger Penske at 1,175 at $1.2 billion, equal to Toronto-area parts boss Frank Stronach.

Celebrities of note are Donald Trump, tied at 423 at $3.2 billion, the same as filmmaker Steven Spielberg, while Oprah Winfrey was tied at 503 with a net worth of $2.8 billion.
