A routine traffic stop led to a police chase down Highway 401 Monday after a man allegedly rammed an OPP cruiser then sped off in the wrong lanes against oncoming traffic.

Chatham-Kent OPP stopped a vehicle around 2 p.m. Monday for a traffic violation on the 401 near Orford Road.

But as the officer approached the vehicle, it sped away. Police said it rammed a cruiser and drove back and forth twice across the median into the eastbound and westbound lanes.

Police eventually stopped the vehicle as it was going east in the westbound lanes near Blacks Road in Elgin County. No one was hurt.

Wesley Santos, 20, from Cambridge, is facing 11 charges under the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

Among the charges: assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous driving, flight from a police officer, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, breach of a probation order, driving while under suspension and driving a motor vehicle without insurance.
