A Chatham-Kent driver who nearly died in a high-speed crash has been charged with drinking and driving and stunt driving.

The single vehicle crash happened May 22 around 8:40 p.m. at Duart Road and Cochrane Line.

Chatham-Kent police said the driver of a Chevrolet Venture minivan lost control and crashed into a ditch. He was transported to Four Counties Hospital and later airlifted to the London Health Sciences Centre. There was no one else in the van.

Police said Wednesday after investigating that the driver had been drinking. He was also doing more than 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Michael Smith, 55, of Rose Beach Line in Morpeth, is charged with driving with an excess blood alcohol concentration and stunt driving. His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days. He is scheduled to appear in court next month.
