A socially conservative Ontario party announced its candidate for the Windsor-Tecumseh byelection this week.

The Family Coalition Party said that it will be represented by Lee Watson on Aug. 1.

“My values line up quite nicely with what the values of the party are,” Watson said.

The Family Coalition Party, formed in 1987 and headed by Phil Lees, is a smaller party known for its pro-life stance on abortion and demand for smaller government.

The party also supports separate school systems, including continued funding for the local Catholic boards and tax credits for home schooling.

Watson, 35, said she’s entering politics for the first time after thinking about it many times over the years.

“It’s been something in my heart for quite a while,” she said.

Born and raised in Windsor, Watson said she’s been married 13 years and has two kids. She said she works as a creative arts director at a local organization.

Family tradition was also a part of her choice to run for a seat in the Ontario legislature, Watson said.

Her great aunt, Ellen Fairclough, was the first female cabinet minister at the federal level.

“That spoke quite a bit to me as well,” she said.
