A Windsor family was left without a home Wednesday after a careless smoker caused a house fire.

The blaze broke out around 11 a.m. at 1305 Hanson Cresc. Acting District Chief Don Easby said crews arrived to find flames in a second floor bedroom. They quickly knocked the fire down. No one was hurt. The fire department said careless smoking started the fire, which caused about $90,000 worth of damage.

“It got into the walls, so they had to open up the walls to make sure the fire was completely out,” said Easby. “So there was some structural damage.”

He said there was also a small amount of water damage on the first floor.

Joe Mizzi, who lives in the  unit, said his son was home at the time of the fire. He had gone outside to see a friend.

“After a short time the friend said ‘I see smoke up there,’” said Mizzi. “They called the fire department.”
