Man caught riding stolen bike, attacks owner with grocery bag

A man caught riding a stolen bicycle is facing several charges, including assault with a weapon, after allegedly attacking the rightful owner with a grocery bag.

A 20-year-old man was on McNaughton Avenue around 6 p.m. Tuesday when he saw someone riding what looked like his bicycle. Chatham-Kent police said the bike was stolen earlier this month. The owner approached the guy, who gave a fake name. He also said he bought the bicycle at a local store.

The legitimate owner took a picture of the bike’s serial number, police said, which proves it belongs to him. The suspect then rode away and went into a store on St. Clair Street.

The bike owner called police and continued to watch him.

While officers were on their way, police said, the suspect came out of the store. He threw a grocery bag at the man and charged at him.

The victim grabbed the attacker in attempt to protect himself, but still suffered several scratches on his neck.

A 34-year-old Chatham man is charged with possession of property under $5,000 obtained by crime, assault and assault with a weapon.
