Armed with a tennis ball and slingshot, animal experts are trying to tire out a hawk stuck in the towering ceiling of University of Windsor building Dillon Hall.

Ted Foreman, owner of Bob’s Animal Control, said he caught the pigeon they believe lured the hawk into the building Friday afternoon, but the Cooper’s Hawk hasn’t been as cooperative.

The bird has perched itself on a pinwheel of eight beams Foreman believes to be roughly 90 feet tall.

Garry Moore, university groundskeeper supervisor, said it’s impossible to reach the bird by ladder.

After the group of men, joined by Phil Roberts, president of the Essex County Field Naturalists’ Club, failed to lure the female hawk down with pigeons as bait, they turned to a slingshot used by arborists to fling rope over high tree limbs.

Each time the ball is shot in the air the bird attempts to escape by flying to the closed windows circling the tip of the ceiling.

They are hoping the bird will tire out and eventually fly down for food and water.

Foreman estimates the hawk can last four or five days without food and water.

More to come.
