Police are seeking the public’s assistance after a possible string of car break-ins occurred in central Windsor early Saturday morning.

Shortly before 3 a.m., police were called to the 1500 block of Moy Avenue for a reported suspicious man in the area, said Staff Sgt. Steve Bodri. A witness told police that it appeared the man had been going through parked cars in the neighbourhood.

Officers located a male standing in an alley south of the reported incident. Police shone a spotlight on the man who then ran away, heading east, said Bodri. Officers chased down the man and eventually located and arrested him at Lincoln Road and Sheppard Avenue.

Police say the man is identified as an 18-year-old east Windsor resident. He denied running away from police despite being winded, said Bodri. He told police that he was at a friend’s house for a party and the alcohol he had drank was causing him to breathe hard, said Bodri.

The man was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and taken to police headquarters where a number of items were discovered on him, including a large amount of loose coins, a jump drive, a leather business card case with business cards in it – with someone else’s name on them – a pocket knife and a pair of eye glasses, said Bodri.

When police questioned him where he obtained the items, Bodri said he smirked and said that some friends at the party gave them to him.

Bodri said the man has been released from custody and could not be charged with theft or possession offences at this time because such items have not been determined to have been stolen.

Detectives are continuing to investigate and police are asking anyone in the area of the 1400 to 1600 blocks of Moy Avenue and Gladstone Avenue that may have had their cars broken into or property stolen from their cars to contact police at 519-255-6700 ext. 4830. Anyone with any information regarding the incident can also call police anonymously at Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS (8477).

Bodri said residents should be reminded to lock their doors to their cars to avert theft as thieves primarily target cars that are left open.
