Enwin Utilities announced Thursday that it’s extending the Ontario Power Authority funded Home Assistance program that helps low income residents reduce their electric bills by making their homes more energy efficient.
The program is open to qualified Enwin customers who are homeowners, tenants and social or assisted living providers.
To date, 1,818 participants have accessed the program, but that represents only an estimated 17 per cent of those eligible.
“There’s still a need in our community for the Home Assistance program,” Enwin vice president Michael Dubin said. “We have worked hard to lobby the OPA and are pleased to announce the extension.”
Home Assistance participants have on average received $606 in upgrades to their homes resulting in annual savings of $128. The upgrades have ranged from energy efficient light bulbs to appliances in some cases.
The program also includes a free in-home energy assessment to identify areas that could be improved.
